Freehold Regional High School District: What Homebuyers Need to Know
If you're buying a home in western Monmouth County, there's one school question that matters more than any other — and it's not the one most buyers think to ask. It's not "how good are the schools?" It's "which high school will my address actually feed?"
That's because of the Freehold Regional High School District (FRHSD) — and if you're looking in Marlboro, Manalapan, Freehold, Howell, Colts Neck, or Englishtown, this district is part of your decision whether you know it yet or not.
What Is the Freehold Regional High School District?
The Freehold Regional High School District is a public regional school district founded in 1953, and it's the largest regional high school district in New Jersey by enrollment: six high schools, about 10,000 students, and a student–teacher ratio of roughly 15:1. It's accredited by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools.
It serves students in grades 9–12 from eight communities in western Monmouth County:
- Colts Neck Township
- Englishtown
- Farmingdale
- Freehold Borough
- Freehold Township
- Howell Township
- Manalapan Township
- Marlboro Township
Each of the district's six high schools sits in its namesake town: Colts Neck High School, Freehold High School (Freehold Borough), Freehold Township High School, Howell High School, Manalapan High School, and Marlboro High School.
The Part That Surprises Buyers: Your Town Isn't Your High School
Here's the quirk that makes this district unique — and why it matters when you're house hunting. School attendance boundaries in FRHSD do not match town boundaries. Your home address, not just your town, determines which high school your child attends. Generally:
- Colts Neck → Colts Neck High School
- Englishtown → Manalapan High School
- Farmingdale → Howell High School
- Freehold Borough → Freehold High School
- Freehold Township → Freehold High School or Freehold Township High School
- Howell → Colts Neck, Freehold Township, or Howell High School
- Manalapan → Freehold Township or Manalapan High School
- Marlboro → Colts Neck or Marlboro High School
So two homes in the same town — sometimes on nearby streets — can feed different high schools. Before you fall in love with a house, it's worth confirming the assigned school for that exact address with the district (frhsd.com, 732-792-7300). 12 Magnet Programs — Apply in 8th Grade, Attend Anywhere in the District
The district's other standout feature is its 12 specialized magnet programs. Any 8th-grade student from a sending school in the district can apply, admission is competitive, and if selected, the student attends the school where the program is housed — no matter which town they live in:
- Colts Neck High School — Law & Public Service; Naval Junior ROTC
- Freehold High School — Medical Sciences; Computer Science; Culinary Arts & Hospitality Management
- Freehold Township High School — Global Studies; Animal & Botanical Sciences
- Howell High School — Fine & Performing Arts; Humanities
- Manalapan High School — Science & Engineering; Law Enforcement & Public Safety
- Marlboro High School — Business Administration
The district also offers the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Programme at Freehold Township and Howell High Schools.
For a family relocating here, that means a child's interest — medicine, engineering, the arts, business, law — can shape the school choice, not just the street address.
Why This Matters When You're Buying
Schools are one of the biggest drivers of home values in Monmouth County, and FRHSD is a big part of why towns like Marlboro, Manalapan, and Colts Neck hold their value: families move here specifically for these programs. Understanding the district before you buy means no surprises after closing — and it can even widen your search, since a home in one town may feed the very school you wanted in another.
As a Marlboro dad with a daughter at Freehold Township High School, I've lived this system firsthand — the magnet application, the busing between towns, all of it. Ask me anything about it.
